The Statue of Paolo V in Piazza Cavour
Ask people in Rimini who the statue in Piazza Cavour is of, and you'll often get a confused reply. Some will tell you it's San Gaudenzo, the patron saint of the city; some will tell you, correctly, that it's a statue of Pope Paul V. Why the confusion? Because, when the Napoleonic troops invaded northern Italy, the good citizens of Rimini reckoned that, with anti-clerical and anti-papal feeling running high in the French troops, the best way to save this splendid statue was to change the dedication on the statue and claim that it was San Gaudenzo.
